Who in the education sector is eligible for/can renew a Blue Light Card?

If you work in any of the following settings, you're eligible - regardless of your specific role.

  • State and independent primary schools
  • State and independent secondary schools
  • Sixth form colleges
  • Vocational colleges and training schools
  • Special schools and referral units
  • Nurseries and early years settings
  • As a childminder (registered with Ofsted, Care Inspectorate Scotland, Care Inspectorate Wales, Tiney, or an NI Health and Social Care Trust)
  • Council-employed staff working within schools or education departments

This list includes everyone employed in those settings - not just teachers. Support staff, administrators, teaching assistants, and other roles all qualify. Retired education workers can also apply, including those with a Teachers Pension Scheme or Scottish Teachers Pension Scheme document.

Who isn’t currently eligible?
  • University and higher education staff
  • Volunteers in educational settings
  • Staff at dance, drama, music, or performing arts schools that do not teach the core curriculum (English, Maths, Science and Social Studies) - specialist arts schools and stage schools fall into this category
  • Online-only education providers
  • Staff at schools that have permanently closed

We hugely value the incredible work from all parts of the education sector; we keep all our eligibility under review and are open to expanding in future.

We verify applications against national school and childminder registers, so if your setting is a legitimate school, college or nursery, our team will be able to confirm your eligibility when you apply. If we need anything additional from you, we'll be in touch.

What accreditation is required for the education sector to sign up for Blue Light Card?
  • Official work/school email domain.
  • Official work/school ID or recent payslip including your name and school.
  • Retirees can provide pension documentation or a P60.

How do I verify my membership or renewal?

Our verification process is quick and easy. You may be able to verify simply with your work email address. If not, you can upload the required ID document(s) and we’ll do the rest. If you have any questions or need any support, our member operations team is on hand to help.

Teachers, along with teaching assistants, support staff, early years educators and other education professionals, are eligible for thousands of exclusive discounts with Blue Light Card. Are Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) eligible?

Yes, Teaching Assistants are eligible for Blue Light Card providing you work in one of the following:

  • Anyone employed directly by a Primary or Secondary school that teaches the core curriculum
  • Anyone employed directly by a Sixth Form Collage or a Vocational Collage/School
  • Childminders
  • Nursery/ Early years employees
  • Teachers who are employed by agencies who work in schools that teach the core curriculum
  • Anyone employed in a referral unit or special school
