Who inspired you?
Whether you’re a police officer or a dental nurse, work in a care home or within the NHS, we know you each work tirelessly to provide the physical, emotional and social support that helps UK communities.
But what drives a person to take on one of the many roles in the Blue Light community?
For some, it was to stay active; others may have preferred to skip having a standard office job; while others still may perhaps be committed to caring for the vulnerable or working in memory of a family member or to honour the impact one of the services had on their lives.
Here’s what our members said...
Chalkboards and careers advice
Unsurprisingly, with families now prepping to head back to school, many members mentioned their teachers growing up.
Jen, an NHS worker from Hampshire, remembers her English Language teacher having a particular impact in driving her to pursue her current career, claiming that they “sparked my fascination of early language development - and now I'm a children's speech and language therapist!”
Amber, on the other hand, was told by a teacher that she “wasn’t academic enough to be a nurse”, a conversation which she claims gave her “the boot up the backside I needed to prove her wrong”. She now works as an NHS nurse in Essex.
Jennifer, who works for the NHS in Somerset, however, claims she didn’t have a teacher who inspired her and instead chose to follow the example of those who looked after her when she was ill. “They were so caring,’ said Jennifer, ‘it inspired me to want to work in the hospital.”
Looking at the big picture
Mark from Essex, however, had a teacher in Year 9 who unfortunately had to retire due to ill health. Her influence and advice have stayed with him since, particularly now he has entered a career in social care. “She taught me to value life, to make a difference where possible and to not worry what others think but to do what I wanted.”
